Position:
Assistant Coach

John Motherwell has entered his third season as an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team.

In addition to on-the-court help, his work with the post players and scouting, Motherwell serves as the team's recruiting coordinator.

Motherwell came to UWM from Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he had been since 2000. He also has been an assistant coach at the College of St. Scholastica and Concordia University (Minnesota).

"John has been a great addition to our staff," head coach Sandy Botham said. "He is an experienced recruiter with incredible contacts in our region and is a great asset in taking our recruiting to the next level. John has established himself as a tireless worker with a good mind for the game."

"I had heard so much about what a great coach Sandy was before I took this job, and after one year here, everything I had heard has proven to be true," Motherwell said. "Beyond that, we have a department and an administration that is committed to winning and I feel lucky everyday to be a part of that culture." In his last season at Moorhead, the Dragons finished 24-7, won its first conference title in 20 years and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Motherwell's time at Minnesota State coincided with a stellar turnaround in the program, as a streak of seven-straight losing seasons turned into a stretch of five-straight winning campaigns. Minnesota State led the NCAA Division II ranks in rebounding margin twice in the last five seasons and produced more all-NSIC performers than any other school in the last four years.

Prior to his stint at Minnesota State, Motherwell spent one season apiece at Concordia (Minn.) and the College of St. Scholastica. At Concordia, Motherwell was responsible for the entire recruiting program and served a stint as interim head coach. The recruiting class from his time at Concordia won an NSIC title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice. In addition to his basketball coaching duties, Motherwell also served as a defensive secondary coach with the football team. At St. Scholastica, he helped the team to a winning record and the conference tournament championship game.

Motherwell got his start in coaching in the high school ranks in Michigan, where he worked for five seasons as both a head coach and assistant coach.

Motherwell married Sherri Bierschbach in 2001 and the couple resides in Milwaukee.
